Alex Valdez and his father Eduardo Valdez harvests lavender at Bonny Doon Farm on Martin Road near Santa Cruz, California on July 11, 2018. The 5-acre farm owned by Diane and Gary Meehan has been providing high quality lavender since first selling at a local Renaissance fair in 1972. While the harvest at the farm is usually complete by the beginning of July, this year the lavender is ripening the latest it ever has – and the harvest has just begun. Bonny Doon Farm produces many different lavenders including ‘Frieda’, a variety the Meehans created, and named after Diane’s mother. The farm produces soaps, salves, perfumes, oils, body wash, essential oils and beeswax products, some of which are produced from botanical oils from around the globe.
